Game Character Design Complete: Using 3ds Max 8...



Throughout these lessons we will look at the steps required to build a game character from scratch. We will start by using ZBrush to create a 3D sketch based on our character's concept art. Along the way we will use 3ds Max to lay out our UVs and create our texture maps. By the end of this tutorial you will have a solid understand of the workflows that are required to create a highly detailed game character.

Fabricio Moraes graduated in design and since has worked in advertising at Seagulls Fly Studio, located in Rio de Janeiro. His passion for games and animated films led him to study character modeling, and after that, he started to work as freelance character modeler at Liquid Development. He worked on some cool projects like Rock Band 3, Dota 2 and the recently-released Max Payne 3. Today, he is a senior 3D generalist with emphasis on character modeling.


The pipeline of creating 3D character might differ from one studio to another, but the core stages of the 3D character modeling workflow are the same. Below we will discuss the basic approach and key stages of modeling 3D game characters.


This is another time-consuming part when you create 3D characters. Here, game developers complete all the animations in the animation tree, including walking, falling, running, stooping, throwing, dying, shooting, taking damage, talking, etc. The animator uses the bones added during rigging to move the model, rotate, and scale it to mimic different movements and poses. Once the animator is satisfied with a certain position of the model, they save those positions on the timeline.


Instead of using 3D modeling, the VFX stage leverages physics-based simulation to create more complex elements of a 3D game such as explosions, fluids, fur, etc. They use high-end effects software such as VEGAS Effects.


Effective lighting heightens a scene by depicting the location, time of day, mood of the shot, etc. The idea is to make the shot and the 3D model look more realistic and convincing. An expert lighting artist can use lighting to manipulate the viewer on where to focus when exploring the game environment or the 3D model character.


The post-production stage is the last stage of a 3D game character pipeline. All final details and polishes happen at this stage, and the game development team renders the final product. They add the final touches to make the project look professional and polished. In composting, game developers bring together all the rendered 3D elements. They then color-correct or color-grade the composite images to even out any coloration and create a polished, consistent, cohesive look.


This is the end of creating 3d character model that the players can play on their gadgets. The game development process continues even after production is done and the game has shipped; some team members shift to maintenance (creating patches and fixing bugs) and creating downloadable bonus content. I decided to develop my own video game character design, and here I will take us from concept art to final render. Eventually I even did a few animations for ReY; she's a character for a game, after all, so she has to be 'alive'.

The only way we're going to do that is if women see themselves in these positions. So my advice is: Don't let statistics discourage you, use them as fuel. If you are passionate about this field, and you apply yourself, you can do it."

Polygon modeling is more common with game design than any other modeling technique as the very specific control over individual polygons allows for extreme optimization.
